Are you superstitious?
I would not consider myself to be superstitious in the “not walking under ladders” or “breaking mirrors” sense but I definitely believe in a form of superstition. I believe in the power of consistency and the “getting out what you put in” mantra.
I have recently taken on a new perspective on life. I am working to live in the moment and do what brings me the most joy and happiness in that very moment. I want to be able to pour myself into the people, hobbies and opportunities that bring me the will and strength to move on to the next moments and days. When I am focused on the angst I feel for the future or the concern for my past decisions I have far less energy to give to hold up my part of the relationship.
As humans we tend to thrive on the impact of immediacy. We want immediate results, responses, and feelings from our actions and relationships. It is hard to feel the effect of something that requires constancy to feel the impacts. Working out for example. That first work out may be absolutely awful but give it a week of consistency and dedication and those results will be felt! My husband and I were just today discussing this on our morning run. A week of dedicating ourselves to a work out routine again after taking a few weeks off has been a huge boost to our mental emotional and physical health. When you are able and willing to put in the work and energy you’ll see that it comes back to you in powerful ways… sometimes you just have to be open to it.
With children, consistency is key to growth. New routines, teaching strategies, classroom lay outs, behavior supports… whatever it is takes time to implement. It takes work, effort, passion, consistency. Nothing sticks the first time it is applied. With consistency, preparation and discussion new beginnings and traditions can and will form! Just be patient and keep pushing forward. Be kind to yourself and the children. Change is hard but can be overcome with beautiful powerful results.
